UF in the Community spotlights the positive impact of UF in our region. Here are some examples of how we are enhancing our shared community. Office of Community Relations UF Government and Community Relations Monday, January 9, 2023 Across the University of Florida, our 16 colleges, numerous institutes, and health care facilities embrace our shared mission of outreach and service to improve and enrich our community, nation, and the world. UF in the Community spotlights the impact of UF in our region. Although UF has students and employees throughout the state, North Central Florida is home to much of our faculty and staff and to our 50,000+ students. Like all area residents, we want a vibrant, safe, healthy, and equitable place in which to live and thrive. Read More UF Provost Joe Glover Podcast on Building a Leading AI University When NVIDIA co-founder Chris Malachowsky approached University of Florida Provost Joe Glover with the offer of an AI supercomputer, he couldn't have predicted the transformative impact it would have on the university. In just a short time, UF has become one of the top public colleges in the US and developed a groundbreaking neural network for healthcare research. Just a year after the partnership was unveiled in July 2020, UF rose to number five on the US News and World Report’s list of the best public colleges in the US. The ranking was, in part a recognition of UF’s vision for infusing AI into its teaching and research. Listen Now UF archaeologists will study hurricane damage to key Florida indigenous sites The National Science Foundation has awarded emergency funding to archaeologists at three institutions to survey cultural heritage sites damaged by Hurricane Ian earlier this year. Researchers from the Florida Museum of Natural History, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Georgia collectively received more than $65,000 to carry out on-site surveys and generate high-resolution damage and risk-assessment maps for a region encompassing 20-square-miles. A Florida Museum curator will serve as the principal investigator on the collaborative grant. Read More Florida’s Role in the Rescue of America’s Bird University of Florida history Professor Jack E. Davis has made a career out of writing about big environmental topics. He won the Pulitzer Prize in history for his 2017 book The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea, and now he’s got a new book out titled The Bald Eagle: The Improbable Journey of America’s Bird. He tells the story of University of Florida scientists who, in collaboration with the George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center in Oklahoma, launched an egg translocation program using Florida eagles to repopulate southern states ravaged by DDT. Read More UF to reinstate vehicle-restricted area on campus Starting in January, the University of Florida will reinstate road restrictions that reduce vehicular traffic in the academic core of campus. The restrictions, designed to improve pedestrian safety, will begin Jan. 9 during peak traffic hours between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on weekdays when classes are in session. The four entry points to the vehicle-restricted zone will be visibly marked with a sign and flashing red light.
