Early voting is available through Saturday, Nov. 5 from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. There are four designated early voting sites across Gainesville: Supervisor of Elections Office: 515 N. 'I believe the answer is in this room': Gainesville leaders strategize on crushing gun violence Community and faith leaders are looking to address gun violence more collaboratively as shootings continue to rise in Alachua County. Multiple local law enforcement agencies met with city, county and church officials for a workshop Friday at the D.R. Williams Fellowship Hall in Gainesville, aiming to strategize on ways to aggressively tackle gun violence. Read More Amy Richard: Papermaking Talk and Demonstration Join us Thursday, Nov. 3 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the Historic Thomas Center’s Spanish Court for a talk on and demo of papermaking by Amy Richard. Local visual artist Amy Richard will give an artist talk, From Nature to Paper: The Transformative Power of Process, where she will share ideas, imagery and questions about the strong connection between the physical process of making and the mysteries of creative inspiration. Richard will also demonstrate traditional Japanese papermaking techniques used for much of her artwork, some of which may be viewed in the current Galleries at the Historic Thomas Center exhibitions Into the Woods/Out of the Woods. The City of Gainesville, Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Department is excited to have Depot Park serve as the host location for The BASH music festival in 2022. The BASH is a culminating effort to bring a diverse and free music festival to Depot Park this weekend, Friday, Nov 4-Sunday, Nov. 6. This event also serves as the kickoff to the city’s holiday events, including the Depot Park lighting. Come out to see the wonderful light display around the park, and stay for some amazing music, merchandise, art and community. Heartwood is coming to life as its heartbeat gets stronger with pending home sales Thirty-four homes being built in the long-anticipated Heartwood development in southeast Gainesville are open to potential buyers. The homes are being constructed on the former site of the Kennedy Homes housing project at 1721 SE Eighth Ave., which once housed approximately 450 residents before it was found to be inhabitable almost two decades ago. Gainesville Fire Rescue wants to encourage residents to check the batteries in their smoke alarms every time there is a time change. This is the perfect time to adopt this simple, life-saving habit. The National Fire Alarm Code recommends a minimum of one smoke alarm on each level of a home, including one inside each bedroom for new construction and one outside each sleeping area. This ordinance includes dine-in, take-out or delivery food services from restaurants, bars, delicatessens and other prepared food vendors. Customer self-service stations with single-use plastic food accessories are permitted, and items provided to prevent spills and injuries, such as coffee spill plugs, splash sticks, cup lids, cup sleeves and cup trays, are not considered single-use plastic food accessories under this ordinance. This ordinance aims to reduce the wasteful practice of providing unwanted and unneeded extra single-use plastic items that can result in increased litter and harm our environment. Single-use plastic food accessory means any item made predominantly of plastic and provided for one-time use with prepared food and beverages used for dine-in, take-out, or delivery. Single-use plastic food accessories include items such as utensils, chopsticks, condiment packets, plastic portion cups and other similar accessories.
