Office of Community Relations UF Government and Community Relations Monday, March 20, 2023 Across the University of Florida, our 16 colleges, numerous institutes, and health care facilities embrace our shared mission of outreach and service to improve and enrich our community, nation, and the world. UF in the Community spotlights the impact of UF in our region. Although UF has students and employees throughout the state, North Central Florida is home to much of our faculty and staff and to our 50,000+ students. Like all area residents, we want a vibrant, safe, healthy, and equitable place in which to live and thrive. Here are some of the ways in which we are enhancing our shared community. You're invited to the April 19th UF Eye Opener Discovery Breakfast with Christopher Ferraro to discuss Sustainable Construction Engineering Register Now UF Health joins national effort to improve patient outcomes The University of Florida is among 42 health systems nationwide chosen by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to carry out pioneering initiatives to accelerate the implementation of practice-changing research results in clinical care to improve patient outcomes. Participating health systems have the opportunity to prepare proposals that break down barriers to the delivery of health care through organizational policy and practices changes, providing skills to personnel, developing relationships among other organizations and/or through engagement with communities in the first stage of the initiative. Each health system can receive up to $500,000 for a project that supports preparation for future implementation strategies. A second HSII funding opportunity will support practical and innovative projects that promote uptake of specific evidence from PCORI-funded research studies within the health systems, with funds ranging from $500,000 to $5 million per project. John Fetterman, a Pennsylvania Democrat, checked himself into Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Feb. 15, 2023, to be treated for clinical depression sparked a national discussion around the need for openness about mental health struggles. This comes after Fetterman suffered a near-fatal stroke in May 2022, prompting questions about possible links between post-stroke recovery and mental health. The Conversation asked John B. Williamson, an associate professor of psychiatry and neuroscience at the University of Florida, to explain when depression becomes a crisis and what inpatient treatment entails. Read More Research from the College of Journalism and Communications: The four factors that fuel disinformation among Facebook ads Before and after the 2016 U.S. presidential election, Russia’s Internet Research Agency purchased tens of thousands of Facebook ads in an effort to stoke division among Americans. Their effect on the election is hard to quantify. But their reach is undeniable. “Tens of millions of people were exposed to these ads. So we wanted to understand what made these disinformation ads engaging and what made people click and share them,” said Juliana Fernandes, a University of Florida advertising researcher. “With that knowledge, we can teach people to pinpoint this kind of disinformation to not fall prey to it.” Read More From the College of Public Health and Health Professions: New UF-led study examines older adults’ perceptions of self-driving transportation Autonomous vehicles or self-driving technology could play an important role in helping older adults maintain their independence in the face of age-related mobility, visual and/or cognitive changes that may affect driving. To find out, University of Florida College of Public Health and Health Professions researchers and partners have launched a new study to understand older adults’ perceptions and experiences with an autonomous shuttle in four Florida communities.
