Dear Commissioner Wheeler,
My son has been in Alachua County Jail for eight months in a severe health crisis. He was a college student and martial arts competitor. He was arrested during a psychotic break and needing mental health care. Instead, the Alachua County Sheriff, the Alachua County Courts, and the Alachua County Jail have made a circus out of his evaluations and treatment. When I visited with him this past Thursday, he was totally incompetent, unable to hold a basic conversation, and I couldn't even tell if he recognized me. He has lost a great deal of weight in the past eight months. I have called the state's attorney, the public defender, the jail, and many, many organizations and government officials without getting any response. I am incredibly sad and increasingly furious. This is not right. Who is responsible for this? While my son was experiencing psychosis, he was not in such a severe condition in July. Why has he been allowed to deteriorate to this severe point? Please help!
