Citizens Academy – Session 7 Update

 

Dozens of Alachua County residents who embarked on their latest tour of county facilities Thursday were locked down behind metal doors along with hundreds of inmates.

It was all part of a scheduled Citizens Academy visit to the Alachua County Jail where the class learned about security measures, available programs, mental health resources and how the legal process works for those arrested.

We were still discussing them during a meeting on gun violence initiatives yesterday. We were asked to provide contact information for the youth who spoke on the issue to ensure she is included as a youth participant in the planning process for any initiatives.  I just left a message on your 281-4000 number for you to go and observe the problem on the corner of South Street and Quail that was created when a foot or more of limerock was added to the street.  I had a 911 episode there yesterday when my wheelchair got stuck. I rely on that road because going to the end of Quail is more dangerous with the blind turn and the chronic pothole.

 Good Afternoon Commissioner, Cornell      I'm emailing you today to voice my concerns about the transfer station. The wait times at the transfer stations for the trucks is about forty five minutes to an hour on some days. Which causes a bottleneck effect for the routes. I'm hoping we can come up  with some solutions to help alleviate the wait time. It seems like the city has outgrown the transfer station The 2 suggestions that I have Would be to pay the drivers more and make the building larger if possible. Other than essential services, all Alachua County offices will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, 2024.

Due to the observance of Memorial Day on Monday, May 27, residential curbside collection services for solid waste, recycling, and yard trash will be delayed one day for the entire holiday week. I wanted to make sure you saw the below NACo action alert about some recent efforts to overturn the Treasury Department’s Obligation FAQs and Interim Final Rule (IFR) for the ARPA State and Local Fiscal Recovery Fund. If these efforts are successful, counties would no longer be able to invest SLFRF dollars towards certain personnel costs, reclassify excess funds after the December 31, 2024 deadline and flexibilities for subrecipients would be limited.

I was just thinking of you yesterday,
in regards to the rainwater runoff on Quail Street.
I’m fairly familiar with the Trout Street project.
I’ve been to a couple meetings
and spoken with people from the county and the consultants.
This is closely related, but might be a separate project, or an add-on.

The rainwater coming down Quail Street turns the corner at the beach park,
and heads straight down Devonia,
and then on to the lake, quite quickly.
That’s because Devonia tilts to the south, at that corner in particular,
so no water crosses the street there.

As you will learn this discussion with Mr. Donahey began in December of 2023.
I had an in person conversation with Mr. Donahey yesterday, May 14, 2024, during the break of the BOCC meeting. He reiterated the fact that Jim Rouse the County contract coordinator and the Procurement Manager of the BOCC, both had solutions to make this information readily available to the public. One mile of SW 75th Street, south of Archer Road from its intersection with
SW 73rd Ave south to its intersection with SW 75th Way, is in
extremely poor condition and needs repaving.

We have lived in Thousand Oaks on SW 103rd Ave for 25 years (40 years in
Alachua County) and drive on SW 75th St many times each day. There are
several subdivisions that rely on this road, such as Meadows of Kanapaha
(Phase 1 and 2), Farms of Kanapaha, Kanapaha Pins, and Thousand Oaks.

used to pave SW 24th Ave almost the entire length from SW 122nd St. to SW
91st Street.

There are many roads within the county that have potholes too numerous to

county.

I hope everyone was safe from the storms today. The photos from today in Tallahassee are pretty bad. I have friends with trees down and no power. Thankfully, all of them were ok. We were lucky here. Monday’s meeting was long, but I believe it was fruitful. I will meet with county and city staff next week to begin discussing how we move forward. I’ve also had several discussions with the pastors involved as well. Collaboration will be vital to the success of anything we do with gun violence.

2024 Alachua County Small Farmer Grant Available

 

Small farmers and ranchers have a grant opportunity through the County Commission this summer. The Commission is funding a mini-grant to Alachua County-based farms and ranches that earn between $1,000 and $250,000 annually. Funding is for capital and equipment expenditures that will positively impact these operations' income. Applications must be in the County Manager’s Office by 5 p.m. on June 28, 2024.

2024 Alachua County Small Farmer Grant Available

 

Small farmers and ranchers have a grant opportunity through the County Commission this summer. The Commission is funding a mini-grant to Alachua County-based farms and ranches that earn between $1,000 and $250,000 annually. Funding is for capital and equipment expenditures that will positively impact these operations' income. Applications must be in the County Manager’s Office by 5 p.m. on June 28, 2024.
