Amaya Garcia, New America’s Director of Research and Practice, PreK-12, will moderate the panel. Over the past six years, New America has conducted comprehensive research and analysis of Grow Your Own (GYO) Educator Programs nationwide. This body of work has explored the existing landscape of GYO program and policy, spotlighted new directions for GYO, and guided the agendas of national and state leaders as they look to GYO as a way to support community development efforts, address teacher shortages, and improve and diversify the educator workforce. She will be joined by:

Kelly Kazeck, Early Childhood Workforce Specialist at the MN Department of Education, will share MN’s state systems perspective of early childhood workforce initiatives. In 2023, Minnesota lawmakers allocated over $300 million towards early childhood initiatives, including Grow Your Own ECE, Empower to Educate to recruit and retain early educators, and Dual Enrollment Training initiatives in place to support high school pathways to becoming early educators. MN is creating a new state agency, the Department of Children, Youth, and Families, and TEACH Apprenticeships, which will begin in 2024.

Binal Patel is the Chief Program Officer at Neighborhood Villages, which actively works with 5 local Boston-based early childhood programs (the Neighborhood) to model a “district” and innovate solutions based on the needs and gaps identified by the providers, including operations management, family navigation, mental health support, teaching and learning, and workforce pathways. Neighborhood Villages began a Registered Apprenticeship program in 2023 with a CDA track for new teachers and a Director track for aspiring leaders in the field. Cohort 2 launched in 2024. It currently plays the role of Ambassador for ECE Registered Apprenticeship expansion in MA.

Jennifer De La Jara is the Director of Workforce Development at Charlotte Bilingual Preschool, which provides comprehensive training programs for early educators, focusing on bilingual education and cultural competence. Through a robust mentorship program, Charlotte Bilingual supports early educators' professional growth, offering continuous development opportunities and resources to enhance their teaching practices in a bilingual setting.

We’re thrilled to invite the BUILD community to learn more about Nurture Connection, a national impact network that partners with families and communities to promote Early Relational Health (ERH). You will hear from Dr. David Willis, founder of Nurture Connection along with other Nurture Connection leaders about how in partnership with families, ERH champions around the country are working to promote the flourishing of families and their youngest children through an intentional focus on supporting foundational relationships between infants and toddlers and their parents/caregivers. To achieve this vision, Nurture Connection shares emerging knowledge, amplifies breakthroughs, innovations, and collaborations, supports communities through place-based ERH efforts, and centers parent leadership as a grounding principle of the network. We hope you’ll join this informative and valuable discussion and leave inspired to enhance your coalition efforts.
