Commissioners for Alachua County,
As the county develops plans for resiliency, energy, and waste, I want to let you know that I am opposed to any definition of “zero-waste” that includes incineration.
I hope that you will join the United Nations General Assembly on Sustainable Development in the adoption of the internationally peer-reviewed and approved definition of zero waste, which does not recognize incineration as an acceptable method of solid waste disposal.
Incineration is the most environmentally polluting and expensive way to manage waste or make energy. Incineration results in toxic ash and air pollution that contaminate surrounding air, land, and water, threatening human health, wildlife, wetlands, and other ecosystems.
Major pollutants that could be released by incineration include particulate matter, acid gases, metals, sulfur, and oxides of nitrogen. Health risks include a higher rate of cancer and respiratory illnesses, congenital abnormalities, and hormonal defects. I would like to discuss with you how these issues can affect us locally. I am available at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for your consideration.
