Colleagues,

This Summer the Mayor's Office of Food Policy will assist the NYCPS Office of Food and Nutrition Services in building a professional development schedule for students employed as culinary aides in school kitchens as a part of DYCD's Summer Youth Employment Program. The professional development program is the first of its kind and we are looking forward to making this a memorable and robust summer for our 200 students!

We are reaching out because we would love more participation from our partners in crafting these professional development opportunities. We anticipate 200 students at each event, although the group can be broken into smaller cohorts as well (three groups of ~70 for instance).  Participation can look like sending a staff member to serve on a career panel about the future of food or picking a piece of media (book, movie) to share with students and giving a brief presentation about why it matters, as examples. Thus far we have secured participation from DSNY, FAO, Essex Market, Rethink Food, and New Roots Institute – we’d love to add more names to this roster!

The dates for Summer professional development sessions are Fridays 9am-12pm: July 19th, July 26th, August 2nd, and August 9th. Please let me know if you can contribute!

Thank you,

Rachel Atcheson
