New Findings, April 25 Webinar: The Effects of Cover Crops on Grassland Birds
Grassland birds have experienced widespread population decline in recent decades. Can cover crops support grassland bird conservation? USDA's Conservation Effects Assessment Project (CEAP) offers new findings and an upcoming webinar to help answer this question.
Iowa Study to Inform Management in the Corn Belt
CEAP, in partnership with Iowa State University and the U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey’s South Dakota Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at South Dakota State University, assessed grassland-breeding bird responses to the integration of cover crops in a corn-soybean cropping system in Iowa. Findings may support on-the-ground cropland management decisions informed by a better understanding of the potential role cover crops play in grassland bird conservation efforts in Iowa and similar cropping systems across the Corn Belt.

Join Us April 25: Conservation Outcomes Webinar on Findings from Iowa, Tennessee
- Do cover crops provide needed habitat for grassland birds?
- What is the value of cover crop fields to grassland birds during the winter, spring migration, and breeding periods compared to cropland fields without cover crops?
- What about the value of cover crop fields compared to areas of perennial cover?
On April 25 at 2:00 p.m. eastern, Dr. Adam Janke of Iowa State University and Dr. David Buehler of the University of Tennessee will provide answers to these questions and more during our free, one-hour Conservation Outcomes Webinar. This webinar will share findings from recent studies examining bird use of cover crops conducted in partnership with CEAP, including the study highlighted above. Findings may be applicable for farmers and other land managers, conservationists, and researchers.
Registration is not required. Visit the Conservation Outcomes Webinar Series webpage linked below for additional information, including access instructions.
