Dear Ms. Alford,

I am writing to you as a concerned member of our community regarding the ongoing conflict in Palestine and its impact on our local community. The rise in hate crimes and unjust targeting, specifically against the Muslim, Palestinian, Arab, Black, and Brown communities, as well as those advocating for the rights of Palestinians, is deeply troubling, and it is imperative that our local government takes immediate action to address this issue.

Examples of these cases are numerous – from a Palestinian student at USF having their tires slashed, to student activists at FAU being physically assaulted, and young students having their hijabs torn off. The issue worsens from people losing their jobs because they support Palestine and unjust targeting by law enforcement.

To effectively address this alarming trend, I request the following actions from our local government:

Swift Response: Implement immediate measures to address hate crimes and ensure the safety of all residents, including in Muslim, Palestinian, and black and brown communities. This includes increasing police presence in areas prone to hate crimes, conducting thorough investigations into reported incidents, and holding perpetrators accountable.

Education and Awareness: Launch educational campaigns to promote understanding, respect, and cultural sensitivity. These initiatives can include public awareness campaigns, workshops, and community dialogues that foster empathy and combat stereotypes. These campaigns and initiatives need to include the Palestinian narrative.

Collaboration with Community Organizations: Establish partnerships with local organizations, such as CAIR-FL, to address the concerns and needs of the Muslim and Arab communities. Collaborative efforts can help develop effective strategies to prevent hate crimes and provide support to victims.

Law Enforcement Training: Ensure that law enforcement agencies receive proper training on cultural awareness, implicit bias, and effective communication with diverse communities. This training can help prevent unjust targeting and ensure respectful interactions with community members.

Reporting Mechanisms: Establish clear and accessible reporting mechanisms for hate crimes and incidents of discrimination. This can include a dedicated hotline or online platform where individuals can report incidents confidentially and receive the necessary support.

Community Engagement: Foster community engagement and dialogue by organizing town hall meetings, cultural events, and interfaith gatherings. These initiatives can promote unity, understanding, and a sense of belonging among all community members.

Your leadership in this matter is crucial to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for everyone in our community. I eagerly await hearing about the steps you will take to address this crisis and protect the rights of all residents.

For any inquiries, I recommend contacting CAIR-FL at [log in to unmask]

Thank you.

Sincerely,
