AFC connects 4 Iowa communities to build flood resilience

We traveled to four cities in Iowa to connect with local leaders and find ways to build resilience. As part of our Iowa Flood Resilient Communities Cohort, we are helping these communities advance local flood projects and navigate the federal funding landscape.

The North Carolina Flood Resiliency Blueprint guides communities on how to make decisions and drive investments. AFC has brought together local leaders to increase awareness of the Blueprint and ensure their needs are reflected in its development.

What’s happening in Washington

On March 22, Congress passed its second government funding package for Fiscal Year 2024. Comprising six distinct spending bills, the package concludes Congress's work to fund all federal agencies and programs through September 30, 2024.


American Flood Coalition Action worked with Federal Champion Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-IA) to secure language that directs FEMA to report its progress on incorporating best available science and data, including both current and future flood hazards, into its flood maps.

Upcoming deadlines

NFWF National Coastal Resilience Fund

The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s National Coastal Resilience Fund supports projects that restore and strengthen natural infrastructure that protects coastal communities from storms, floods, and other natural hazards. The pre-proposal applications are due April 10.


FWS Coastal Program

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Coastal Program provides technical and financial assistance to states, municipalities, tribes, individuals, and nonprofits to restore and protect fish and wildlife habitat on public and private lands. To receive funding in Fiscal Year 2024, apply by May 30.


USACE Flood Plain Management Services Program

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Flood Plain Management Services Program provides communities with technical assistance for obtaining, developing, and interpreting flood data, and for planning and identifying ways to reduce flood risk. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and can be initiated by submitting a letter (sample letter) to your local USACE district’s planning office.
