After nearly six months of war, Gaza’s health sector has been decimated. Roughly a dozen of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are only partially functioning. The rest have shut down or are barely operational after running out of fuel and medicine or were damaged in fighting.
Health care workers face the same daily struggle as others in Gaza in finding food for their families and trying to ensure some safety for them. Hospitals have special protections under international law, though those can be removed if combatants use the hospitals for military purposes.

Israel has alleged that hospitals serve as command centers, weapons storage facilities and hideouts for Hamas, but has presented little visual evidence. Hamas has denied the allegations. Israel has been carrying out a large-scale operation in Gaza’s largest hospital, Shifa, for the past week.

Since tracking began in 2014, over 63,000 have died or are missing and presumed dead, according to the Missing Migrants Project, with 2023 being the deadliest year yet.
The report says the deaths are “likely only a fraction of the actual number of lives lost worldwide” because of the difficulty in obtaining and verifying information. For example, on the Atlantic route from Africa’s west coast to Spain’s Canary Islands, entire boats have reportedly vanished in what are known as “invisible shipwrecks.”

Experts have called the growing number of unidentified migrants around the world a crisis comparable to mass casualties seen in wartime. Nearly 60% of the deaths recorded by the IOM in the last decade were related to drowning.

Beijingers play fetch with migratory birds in traditional game
Passersby in Beijing during winter or early spring might happen upon groups of residents playing fetch with birds. It’s a Beijing tradition dating back to the Qing Dynasty, which ruled between the 17th century and early 20th century. Today, only about 50 to 60 people in Beijing are believed to still practice it.
