Dear Commissioner Prizzia,

I listened to your remarks to citizen comment today (March 26, 2024) and I wanted to correct what I feel is an inaccurate depiction of the Animal Welfare Advisory Committee’s input into the leasing of UF’s Swine Unit location as the site for a new Animal Resources facility.

I attended the advisory committee’s meeting on November 15, 2023, wherein Ms. Johnson announced, as part of the ‘Director Announcement’ section of the agenda, that UF’s Swine Unit was being considered as a site but that “the location of the new shelter is still being determined”…and, by the way, there was no mention of a lease. As for myself, knowing the location, traffic, environmental problems, etc., I thought for sure that the idea would surely be shut down by the BOCC.

At NO time was the committee asked for their ideas on criteria or a location for the best site. Since a friend of mine has trouble hearing due to the seating arrangement of the facility chosen for the meeting, I made a recording, which I am more than willing to have you listen to so you can hear for yourself.

Please contact me if you are interested in hearing the recording and/or inform me of other 2023 advisory committee meetings wherein criteria were discussed and proposed sites evaluated.

Sincerely,
Kathleen Ruppert
