Across the University of Florida, our 16 colleges, numerous institutes, and health care facilities embrace our shared mission of outreach and service to improve and enrich our community, nation, and the world. UF in the Community spotlights the impact of UF in our region.

Although UF has students and employees throughout the state, North Central Florida is home to much of our faculty and staff and to our 50,000+ students. Like all area residents, we want a vibrant, safe, healthy, and equitable place in which to live and thrive. Here are some of the ways in which we are enhancing our shared community.​

From the UF College of Nursing: Caring for our communities -  Celebrating Rural Health Day

In honor of National Rural Health Day, the University of Florida College of Nursing is recognizing efforts from student nurses, faculty and alumni who serve rural communities. Though hands-on patient-care experiences such as those offered at UF Health Archer Family Health Care, the college’s nurse-led practice, these rural health care heroes are poised to transform health for local, underserved areas and meet the growing demand for experienced clinicians and researchers.

From WUFT: Radio show for health care workers hits a year on air, plans for more

For Dannielle Obermeier, clinical leader and registered nurse at University of Florida Health Shands Hospital, the workday begins with the 6 a.m. sound of Shift Change Radio Hour. She’s one of tens to hundreds of medical workers tuning in weekly. This support led the radio show, made for health care professionals like her, to celebrate a year on air in October.


Shift Change, of the UF Shands Arts in Medicine program, is an hourlong broadcast dedicated to uplifting Gainesville health care workers and the Shands Hospital community through music.

UF School of Music presents Sounds of the Season – Sunday, December 4 at 7:00PM

UF School of Music presents Sounds of the Season, Sunday, December 4 at 7pm at the Phillips Center. This event is free and open to the public.


Ticket Info: Advanced tickets must be picked up physically from the Phillips Center Box Office beginning Monday, November 28 at noon. A limit of four (4) advance tickets may be picked up per person.



Advanced tickets only guarantee admission prior to 6:45 p.m. Remaining seats will be filled starting at 6:45 p.m. to the stand-by line on a first-come, first-serve basis.

UF/IFAS research gives back food year-round

UF/IFAS research and education centers (RECs) grow fruits and vegetables all across Florida to develop growing techniques and cultivars that benefit farmers. These centers are spread from Jay in the Panhandle to Homestead in Southeast Florida.

From UF/IFAS: Florida-Friendly Landscaping Gardening Apps Update

Gardening decisions are now easier and more accessible with mobile web tools from the UF/IFAS Florida-Friendly Landscaping™(FFL) program. You might have heard of the Florida-Friendly Landscaping™ Plant Guide app, with details and phots of over 400 Florida-Friendly plants. But did you know that it’s now free? The FFL program also has apps that can help you design a butterfly or bee garden, get personalized information on Florida’s fertilizer rules, and help identify toxic plants. All of these apps are now free and designed to work on both mobile devices and desktop computers; all you need is internet access. You can get the apps at the FFL website:
