Across the University of Florida, our 16 colleges, numerous institutes, and health care facilities embrace our shared mission of outreach and service to improve and enrich our community, nation, and the world. UF in the Community spotlights the impact of UF in our region.

Although UF has students and employees throughout the state, North Central Florida is home to much of our faculty and staff and to our 50,000+ students. Like all area residents, we want a vibrant, safe, healthy, and equitable place in which to live and thrive. Here are some of the ways in which we are enhancing our shared community.​

From the UF Wertheim College of Engineering: UF Genome Sleuths Build a Map to Human Cancer Detection by Tapping Into the DNA of Other Species

The convergence of two engineering disciplines at the University of Florida is building a valuable tool that will allow researchers to diagnose human cancers, potentially leading to earlier clinical interventions.



Researchers in the Department of Computer & Information Science & Engineering and in the Department of Environmental Engineering Sciences are leading a $1.5 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Cancer Institute study. Together with a professor in the Department of Biostatistics, their grant seeks to create a pan-mammalian tumor atlas that will aid in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to model the evolution of cancer across hundreds of mammalian species — and its correlation to humans.

UF School of Music presents Sounds of the Season, Sunday, December 4 at 7pm at the Phillips Center. This event is free and open to the public.


Ticket Info: Advanced tickets must be picked up physically from the Phillips Center Box Office beginning Monday, November 28 at noon. A limit of four (4) advance tickets may be picked up per person.



Advanced tickets only guarantee admission prior to 6:45 p.m. Remaining seats will be filled starting at 6:45 p.m. to the stand-by line on a first-come, first-serve basis.

From Florida Gators: NFL Partners with the University of Florida to Measure On-Field Head Impacts Using Novel Mouthguard Sensors

The National Football League (NFL) today announced that the University of Florida has joined its program to collect data from on-field head impacts – through novel mouthguard sensors – to inform injury reduction efforts at the professional and collegiate level, including through rules changes and the development of higher-performing equipment like position-specific helmets.

Florida Museum of Natural History: Discovery Time series for children

Discovery Time is a video series by our Discovery Zone Nature Ambassadors, designed for families with young children (2+, but all ages are welcome) to introduce kids to nature.



This site includes short family-friendly videos, guided open exploration on a variety of topics related to natural history, material suggestions for easy-to-do affordable kid-friendly fun and favorite book suggestions from the Discovery Zone Library.

University of Florida/IFAS awarded over $16 million in research grants to fight citrus disease

University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences faculty have secured over $16 million in new funding to advance research projects to combat the deadly citrus greening disease that threatens the Florida citrus industry.



The funding is awarded from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture Emergency Citrus Disease Research and Extension (ECDRE) program, designed to provide solutions to U.S. citrus growers.
