*Day 118: Florida Freedom Summer of 2024: Yesterday belongs to the
Republicans. The GOP—Grand Old Past They’re not getting any younger….*

To be sure, there are young Republicans voting and even some running. But
the Millennial, Gen X, GenZ, young folks and even high schoolers are a
bloc going to the Democrats. And if the GOP win big in the Mid-terms, it
will be another reason that the outcome in 2024 will favor the Democrats,
no matter who is running. The GOP is running against, not for anything.

Furthermore, the midterms may not show it but the Republicans clearly are
divided between supporters of Donald J. Trump and his acolytes, and the
rest of them. If Trump runs, the party will be further split between those
who want him, and those who want Trump without Trump—Ron DeSantis, R-FL Ted
Cruz, R-TX, etc.

Republicans have become the party of naysayers. They want to stop women
from having abortions; they want to bloc gun control; they favor removal of
government regulations, e.g., to protect the environment, worker safety,
etc. Their primary claim is they want to cut taxes! Especially on the
local and state levels now.

The property owners who benefit may not need public schools. They may not
need health care, Medicaid. They want to benefit small businesses, but
Democrats aren’t interfering with that. Wal-Mart, Amazon, Verizon,
Exxon-Mobil are blocking them. Corporations may not need such frills.

But people need such benefits. Students need to cut college debts. The
banks don’t like that. But people do.

The U.S. Supreme Court may call corporations people, and allow them to
provide as much campaign dollars as they would like but so far, no one has
figured out how to give them the right to vote. People vote.

Oh, yes. They may vote Republican in the vain hope that somehow they will
stop inflation, and bring crime rates down—which already are falling--but
when the next hurricane or fire hits, people will realize that the GOP has
no interest in spending to provide relief for such crisis.

Fools—that is Republicans—and so called independents will vote in Florida
for Governor DeSantis (R-FL) but his ludicrous rightwing agenda will serve
only to irritate the public. Stop people from abortion, from gender change
therapy, and reports will follow of increased back alley deaths, and
suicides.

But the reality of the dying of the GOP, the losing of memory by the
Elephant, is seen in the coming of youth, and young peoples’ issues and
concerns. They may not turn out in numbers in the mid-term election, but
you can bet by 2024 as more young people become eligible to vote, they will
be Democrats, or perhaps locally members of a Green Party.

The Greatest Generation, the Silent generation, the Boomers will be dying
off as the younger generation comes of voting age. There is nothing in the
Republican Party or on the U.S. Supreme Court to interest young people.

And the Democrats have the heroes. Check out the Great Young Hope Maxwell
Frost in Florida. The significant story is not that he is endorsing U.S.
Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) but that she is endorsing him to be her successor.

Old Bernie Sanders is stumping for young Democrats on a last minute tour.
He soon will be gone, as will Joe Biden, but younger perhaps more adept
people are replacing them. Protests on campus? You can bet that the
majority are Democrats.

So take heart. No matter what the outcome on Tuesday, tomorrow belongs to
us—that is, the young, and people like you who are young at heart.

Gabriel Hillel, for Florida Freedom Summer of 2024
