*** This Email is Being Blind Copied to All Commissioners***
Mr. Ferguson,
Thank you for your email below.
Our county is abysmally behind in road maintenance and this commission’s goal, is to turn that around. But it won’t be overnight. Over Thirty years of deferred maintenance is a big issue, both in terms of time
and resources. This commission is working to creatively address acquiring the resources to catch us up on this issue. The Board is increasing the roads budget and looking for other funding options as well, trying to find options that affect the citizens
of Alachua County the least.
As for the current Capital Improvement Program (CIP), CR 234 is not programed in the next 5 years.
Since 2016 – 2017, the Board of County Commissioners has allocated General Fund (Property Taxes) dollars towards road rehabilitation projects. In FY 2017, the Board allocated $3,000,000 and this amount grew
to approximately $4.2 million for current year for roadway rehabilitation projects. In 2016, the Board also amended its Comprehensive Plan to facilitate straight milling and resurfacing projects on our roadways. Unfortunately, even with this funding, our
infrastructure needs greatly exceed the available funding. Gas Tax revenues are utilized to fund the County’s transportation departments and Road & Bridge regular maintenance operations, including mowing, tree trimming, potholes, guardrails, limerock “dirt”
road grading, street sweeping, bridge maintenance, and many other everyday maintenance operations. Additionally, now approximately four (4) years ago, the Board adopted the Stormwater Assessment that is now allowing Stormwater crews not only maintain, but
also reopen historic drainage-ways around the County.
There is a portion of the Gas Tax that can only be used for new roadways, or improvements along existing roadways, that would allow for increased capacity on our roadways. Unfortunately, this portion of the
Gas Tax cannot be used for maintenance operations due to Florida Statutes.
However, even with the dedicated funding from the General Fund, we are too far behind for that to ever work. Here is what the Board of County Commissioners is doing:
Furthermore, the Board has placed the Infrastructure Tax on the November ballot and depending on the results, the CIP will be amended.

BOCC,
Will the county ever bother to re-pave CR 234 from 441 to 26? I have lived on this road most of my life. Hasn’t been re paved in 25 years and is in terrible condition. My kids go to school in Micanopy and either my wife or I are driving from Windsor to Micanopy
twice a day 5 days a week. It is ridiculous the potholes and patches on this road beating up our vehicles. We literally have to swerve the whole time avoiding all the worse spots. The patches are a joke the potholes just become speed bumps.
Now you have 1% sales tax on the ballot with the promise of spending half of the revenue on the roads. I’ll believe it when I see it. Lived in this county my entire life paying the highest taxes in the state and can’t even get the most basic amenities like
a decent county road. BOCC needs to get its priorities straight!!!
