Letter to the Editor to the Gainesville Sun

“Let’s do something fun!” Those were the words I heard when I turned away momentarily from the riveting filibuster by Ben Sasse, our new University of Florida (UF) president.  I returned for his amazing interaction with the UF Board of Trustees.  He aced the orals, and truly deserves an honorary Ph.D. for his performance.

The message came from a cartoon mother or teacher to cartoon children in a poorly animated segment of children’s programming on WUFT-TV, the university’s television station. Actually I must confess that I first peeked at ABC-TV’s The View, because Sasse’s interview frankly was boring and the students’ protest was limited.  The Trustees’ meeting was held during prime classroom instruction hours and they already reported that the faculty’s “no confidence” vote would not affect their unanimous decision, once Sasse promised to be politically celibate.

Thanks to Cox Communications, I also talked briefly on the phone to a caller about my Medicare options and then switched to the government channel, so that I could find out the latest about one neighborhood’s sewage problem at an Oct. 25, 2022, County Commission meeting.

So I may have missed Sasse’s response as to whether he is or ever was a member….(200 words)
