Veterans Day ceremony goes virtual

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the City of Gainesville is honoring veterans with a commemorative video this year in place of its annual Veterans Day ceremony at Evergreen Cemetery.

City Observes Veterans Day Holiday on Wednesday, Nov. 11

In observance of the Veterans Day holiday, city offices will be closed Wednesday, Nov. 11. The Regional Transit System (RTS) will provide its holiday service, which runs between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., to routes 1, 2, 5, 8, 10, 13, 15, 16, 20, 26, 35, 43, 75 and 711. Please visit the RTS website and schedule pages for more information. Residential curbside collection for garbage, recycling and yard trash will not be affected by the holiday.

Housing Action Plan Telephone Town Hall - Nov. 16

We're hosting a telephone town hall Monday, Nov. 16 at 7:15 p.m. to present a final draft of the Gainesville Housing Action Plan to neighbors and take their questions about affordable housing strategies outlined in the plan. The panel will present an overview of the housing plan draft, as well as these strategies to expand housing affordability in Gainesville:

Creating a Community Land Trust;
Forming partnerships with area employers to create an employer-assisted housing program that supports workforce housing for low- and moderate-income residents;
Creating an inventory of public, institutional and underutilized land suitable for affordable housing.

Neighbors with landlines who would like to receive an automated call back at the time of the event should register in advance online. Please note, registration closes three hours before the start of the town hall. At the time of the event, callers may dial in at 1-888-410-3427 to ask questions, share comments or simply listen in. Spanish speakers are invited to call 1-844-881-1317.

Applications for the Mentor-Protégé Program-Extended Deadline Nov. 30

The Office of Equity and Inclusion has announced the application process is open for businesses to participate in the 2021 Mentor-Protégé Program. The program supports the development of small and diverse businesses by partnering emerging businesses (protégés) with established businesses (mentors) throughout the area. The program is designed to help local businesses become qualified to do business with the City of Gainesville. Application are being accepted online through Monday, Nov. 30, 2020 (extended deadline). City Commission Meeting Updates

Individuals wishing to comment on specific agenda items are invited to comment live during the meeting via the public participation line at 1-800-876-7516. Neighbors may also submit written comment on agenda items in advance of the meeting using the e-comment feature on the city website.

The Gainesville City Commission will begin taking general public comment for City Commission meetings by voicemail recording. Neighbors may leave their 3-minute general public comment by dialing 352-334-5003. General public comment periods will end at 12 p.m. the Wednesday before the commission meeting. All voice recordings submitted before the deadline will be played during the designated General Public Comment period of the City Commission meeting. Voice recordings will be played in subsequent order until all comments have been played or the 30-minute time limit has been reached.
