Dear Commissioner Cornell,

I am Denise Matthews a constituent living in the Blueberry Bay Neighborhood of Waldo, (Earleton) Fl.

I would like to meet with you to discuss a neighborhood concern about the 55 mph speed limit that goes through our neighborhood on county road 1469. Many of us are concerned about the dangers that are presented by this speed and particularly in combination with the sharp turn in 1469 between The Cove and Blueberry Bay neighborhoods. The high speed limit and the sharp curve are quite restricting for any pedestrian activity, as well as the restriction on our ability to keep our children safe both getting on and off the school bus and any sort of recreational use—eg bike riding, walking. Also our seniors are endangered by this speed, e.g. one neighbor who uses her golf cart to cross the road in order to go to the lake has bad eyesight and several other seniors use golf carts to cross the road to see others and to visit The Cove. We also have mothers crossing the road with baby carriages and small children. All these activities are rendered very dangerous because of the speed limit and of course as you are aware, few motorists even stay within that limit. Over the years there have been collisions, fences have been hit and many deer have been killed as cars come around the big curve at a speed that often exceeds 55 mph—its really not possible to be prepared for what is around the corner if you are speeding on that curve.

A few years back I contacted the County Dept of Transportation and they ascertained that the speed was OK and told me that if any change were to be made we would have to consult with our County Commissioners. Since you and Chuck Chesnut split this portion of the county in your representation, I assume it is a matter for you both, but I wanted to talk with you first to get your take on the matter.

Please let me know when you are available to meet.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Denise Matthews
