Dear Commissioner Cornell,

I'm a Clinical Infectious Diseases Pharmacist who is alarmed at the lack of action addressing the current public health threats of climate change and air pollution. Climate change and its main driver, the burning of fossil fuels, are issues the medical community recognizes that we need to address now.

Please ask Governor DeSantis to rethink his decision to deny Floridians the benefits of much-needed funds to our counties and municipalities.

As you may know, Governor DeSantis has refused to allow state level spending of 350 million Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) dollars, which would have gone to building resilience to extreme weather events in Florida counties and municipalities. This money is coming out of Floridians tax dollars and may be sent to states like California and New York!

In a year of extreme weather events including ocean temperatures of 100 degrees, heat indexes well over 100 degrees, along with the devastation caused by 2002 Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, and Hurricane Idalia just a few weeks ago, the Governors rejection feels especially ill-advised.

Please contact the Governor and ask him to change direction and free up these desperately needed funds!

Sincerely,

Shauna Junco

Orlando, Florida
