Good morning Commissioner Alford,

Thank you for the email you sent me yesterday, which I’ve copied and pasted here…

“You asked many questions and Julie Johnson has taken the time to provide a very detailed response to your questions. She is emailing you directly.

Thank you for taking the time to attend our commission meeting yesterday. I am excited about this opportunity to work with the UF Veterinary School and I believe it will provide the best care for the hundreds of animals that pass through our care. I also know that staff is taking great care to product our investment of tax dollars as well as protecting the environment.

Thank you for your interest in care and welfare of the animals in Alachua County. Your diligent oversight is appreciated.”

I have a few questions as related to your email. What you wrote in the first line implies you have already read Ms. Johnson’s reply to me. Why is it that I haven’t received her response as of yet?

In your second paragraph you state that Animal Resources will now have the opportunity to work with the UF Vet School. They already are working with UF’s Vet School. What will change? What new agreement has been reached that would come into effect if the Animal Resources facility was physically located closer to UF? Who’s to say the next department chairperson or president of UF would continue any agreement?

It has been mentioned several times by the county manger that “UF knows they have a problem that needs to be cleaned up.” So, they are waiting to ‘clean up’ a known environmental problem until they receive three million dollars in a lease agreement from the citizens of Alachua County? Is there no other property in Alachua County that can be purchased for three million dollars or less…or is there no other already county owned property that can be used for a new Animal Resources and Care facility?

Your responses to these questions would be appreciated by March 29, 2024.

Sincerely,
Kathleen Ruppert
