Thank you for your email. On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners and Chair Robert “Hutch” Hutchinson, Alachua County was recently made aware of an incident involving a detention officer’s treatment of an inmate at the Alachua County Jail. We are very concerned about the report detailing the detention officer’s treatment of this individual. Detention Officer Ulrich has been arrested and charged with battery and tampering with a witness. The County takes the safety and welfare of individuals at the jail very seriously. Investigations into this matter are ongoing and we will be carefully monitoring this case.

Subject: Inmate abuse at the Alachua County jail

Dear Commissioners,
I am writing to ask what you are doing to fix the horrible situation of inmate abuse at our Alachua county jail and why you have been silent? It is my understanding that 2 inmates (of color) have recently been beaten by guards and almost worse the jail has done everything it can to hide the matter.
I’d like to know the health status of the inmates. I’d like to know if their mothers have been notified and allowed contact. I also want to know the employment status of the guards in question. Have they been fired and charged? They should be on both counts!!
I have also heard that inmates have been regularly denied medical attention, like when these 2 inmates were beaten. And I’d really like to know why inmates are being fed food that is packaged for zoo animals to consume That’s beyond inhumane treatment.
When does the contract between the county & the jail expire? The contract must not be renewed unless major changes occur.
Thank you.
