On behalf of the Board of County Commissioners and Chair Robert “Hutch” Hutchinson, Alachua County was recently made aware of an incident involving a detention officer’s treatment of an inmate at the Alachua County Jail. We are very concerned about the report detailing the detention officer’s treatment of this individual. Detention Officer Ulrich has been arrested and charged with battery and tampering with a witness. The County takes the safety and welfare of individuals at the jail very seriously. Investigations into this matter are ongoing and we will be carefully monitoring this case.

Good afternoon,
It has come to my attention that several guards in the mental health area of the jail, namely guards Ulrich, Whelton, and Golden, engaged in the violent abuse of two inmates. Needless to say, as a taxpayer, I find this behavior both reprehensible and unacceptable. I urge you to launch an immediate investigation into this incident, as well as any other similar incidents, and hold the parties involved accountable.
I am a registered voter, and I intend to use my vote as well as my voice to insure we have leaders in place that I trust will have zero tolerance for the denial of people’s human rights.
