Laura,
This is in reference to a discussion at our last meeting on July 15. I wanted to make sure we could take advantage of these overlapping concerns. It seems like this could be a real opportunity for the Victim Service and Rape Crisis Center.

Hi Commissioner Alford,

Thank you for your email. There was legislation passed in 2019 which is now law under Section 509.096, Florida Statutes which requires public lodging establishments to provide annual training regarding human trafficking awareness to its employees and also required that by January 1, 2021 the establishment have a procedure in place and post a human trafficking public awareness sign at the establishment. The posting language is what is listed on the DBPR bulletin, attached. This is enforced by the State.

If you like, I can reach out to your contact at the Rape Crisis board to share this information, and to inquire as to what additional information or assistance would be helpful. Please let me know if you would like to discuss, my cell phone is (352) 363-8619.

Hi Jessica!
I’m on the Victim Services and Rape Crisis Board and they’ve been working to get posters with information about human trafficking to hotels for them to post. They’ve been visiting hotels and trying to leave them at the front desk. I think that is likely ineffective - I suggested you might could connect our chair with a hospitality group.
Any thoughts?
