The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the following Commercial Horticulture Programs for September 2019. These programs are being offered by Dr. Tatiana Sanchez, Commercial Horticulture Agent, at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32609) unless otherwise indicated.

IRRIGATING WISELY IN FLORIDA’S AGRICULTURE – September 17, from 3 to 5:30 p.m., at Brown’s Farm (18120 NE State Rd. 26, Hawthorne, FL 32640)  (See attached flyer)

Agricultural producers are invited to this free event on adoption of water-saving technologies, updates on how these technologies have performed in the area, and how to afford them. 

Topics will include water-saving technologies, resources, and options for farms. One of our attendees will have the chance to test a soil moisture sensor for free during the spring cropping season! The target audience is producers of horticultural and agricultural crops.
2 Continued Education Units (CEUs) will be offered in the following categories: Core, Ag Row Pest Control, Ag Tree Pest Control, and Private Applicator.

There is no cost to attend this program; however, registration is required through Eventbrite at https://tinyurl.com/y6gkg5ce by September 12, 2019.


STARTING & DEVELOPING A FARM BUSINESS IN FLORIDA – September 30 & October 9, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  (See attached flyer)

There will be two workshops held for the beginner farmer on starting a business and developing a strategic business plan.


Workshop 1:  Starting a Farm Business in Florida
September 30, 2019
Articulate your vision and goals; assess your resources; evaluate the suitability and feasibility of farm enterprises; and learn about business structures, registration, and regulations.

Workshop 2:  Developing Your Farm Business Plan
October 9, 2019
Conduct market research and a SWOT analysis. Develop a mission statement, marketing plan, operations plan, human resource plan, financial plan, and risk management plan. 


Register for one or both workshops. Registration includes printed materials (primary participant only), lunch, and refreshments.  Register through Eventbrite at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/starting-developing-a-farm-business-in-florida-tickets-69443670889 by September 23, 2019. There will be no refunds for the registration fee.


Registration fees to attend both of the workshops is $50 (primary participant) and $30 (secondary participant), or register to attend one workshop at $30.00 (primary participant) and $20.00 (secondary participant).  A late fee of $10.00 will be applied to registrations after September 23, 2019.
