Mr. Little, Thank you for your contact outlining your concerns for the reopening of schools. As a retired teacher and mother of a local teacher as well as a grandmother, I too am anxious for more answers moving forward to a new school year. This pandemic has disrupted our way of life to the point that we cannot plan much past the current day. I think we will see great changes in the coming weeks and your concerns will become a part of the conversation as we try to offer solutions. Please know that the BOCC has the safety and well-being of our children as the highest priority.
Feel free to contact me with questions or concerns. I’ll do my best to address them and share with our Board. Stay well. Marihelen Wheeler 352 339-1113

I am a concerned father who appreciates schooling for my child, but at the same time my child’s safety is first and foremost. With all the video technology as well as e-learning programs that are available, I wanted to implore you to please deliberate and consider keeping our children on a remote learning plan for their safety. As a now teleworking father, I understand how it is to work from home while taking care of my child and the responsibilities that come with it. At the same time, to ensure his safety it’s well worth what needs to be done. As a business professional in the medical field and the parent of a 9 year old I can assure you that children under 12 maybe even older are not well equipped to always use clean practices nor always communicate how sick they feel to parents, coupled with inadequate space and ventilation equipped to prevent virus spread for children in classrooms and the coronavirus can and will make a dangerous situation for children especially when it starts to be come cooler in the coming fall. I myself think that waiting until it gets colder or worse with the virus to keep children home again is also a dangerous proposition for our children. Video conferencing has become an easy way for teachers to remain connected and keep students engaged, as well as e-learning tools that my child has used on a weekly basis this past school year during the pandemic. I appreciate the board for making sound decisions and remaining concerned with Alachua county’s children and it’s citizens health during the pandemic, I appreciate you taking the time to read my concerns as well.
